Symptom:

Windows Server 2008 system recovered to VMware virtual machine from exported disks or bare metal restore gives Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on boot

Cause:

VMware sometimes has interoperability issues with Windows Server 2008

See https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/b4d45d9d-4c90-4ab0-ae38-f1257ce9c608/windows-7-server-2008-r2-bare-metal-restore-0x0000007b-stop-error?forum=windowsbackup

Resolution:

1. Boot with Recovery ISO

2. Launch disks from the desktop and mount the volume containing C:

3. Launch Fred application from the Utilities menu

4. Click File -> Open hive

5. Click Edit -> Enable Write Support

6. Browse to /media/axcient/<volume>/Windows/System32/Config and open System.sam

7. Expand ControlSet001

8. Expand ControlSet001\services and ensure the following are set:

  • intelide >Start = 0
  • LSI_SAS >Start = 0
  • msahci > Start = 3
  • pciide > Start = 3

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 above.  Adjust ControlSet002\services and any additional ControlSet entries.

10. Click File >Unload Hive.  Select Yes to save changes on exit

11. Reboot and remove Recovery ISO.

Symptom:

After exporting a backup of a physical machine to a VM format (vmdk, vdi, vhd or raw) and configuring your new virtual machine, you get a Blue Screen on boot.

Cause:

This occurs because the proper hard drive type is not selected for the exported hard drive format.  x360Recover uses a generic IDE controller to be compatible with all VM formats.

Resolution:

When creating the virtual machine definition on the hypervisor, ensure that you select 'IDE' as the type of storage controller rather than 'SCSI'.

Alternatively, boot the system from the x360Recover Recovery Toolkit, and use the Driver Injector to install the correct storage controller drivers into the virtual machine image.
