Problem

Open file backup fails with error messages similiar to the following:
INFO: Initializing open file backup [C:\] {VSS-WS03.dll}
INFO: VSS: ERROR: Error during the last asynchronous operation.
INFO: VSS: ERROR: - Returned HRESULT = 0x80042308
INFO: VSS: ERROR: - Error text: VSS_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND

This error means that Microsoft VSS failed to take a snapshot of the file system(s) and that the backup job will be unable to backup any files that are opened exclusively by other applications.

Resolution

The most common cause of this error is that VSS has been disabled on one or more of the volumes that are part of the backup.To check whether or not VSS is disabled, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Windows Start menu, right click My Computer, and choose Manage.
  2. Right click Shared Folders, choose All Tasks, and then click Manage Volume Shadow Copies.
  3. For each volume that you are trying to backup, make sure that shadow copies are enabled. If they are not, then highlight the volume in the list and click the Enable button to enable shadow copies.

NOTE: If these steps do not resolve the error, please reboot the computer and try again. We have found that rebooting fixes most problems with VSS. Feel free to try more diagnosis steps below.
