This article will go over the steps needed to use the AA BMR CD on an Axcient CC Node to recover as a VM.
1. Check the agent you want to restore. You will first need to verify the size of the agent you want to recover. This can be done by clicking the summary tab of the agent. Add up the space used in GB for the drive letter you plan on restoring.
I.E. For instance, you may have an agent that has a 100 GB partition, but only 37.48 GB used. You will then want to create the partition for at least 38 GB. If you plan on needing more space for this agent after the VM creation, please create the disk for a larger amount. In this example, you could create the VM at 100 GB. This would allow room for growth if needed.
2. On the CC Node, open up the Hyper-V Console. On the top left, right-click on the server name under the Hyper-V manager and choose NEW Virtual Machine, then click next.
3. Type in the name of the agent you want to restore. Check mark the box "Store the virtual machine in a different location" and choose X:\VMs. Click next
4. Choose the generation of the virtual machine you are restoring. If you are unsure, you can leave the default setting of "Generation 1". Click next.
Note, "Generation 2" provides support for features such as SecureBoot, SCSI Boot and PXE boot using a standard network adapter. Guest operating systems must be running at least Windows Server 2012 or 64-bit versions of Windows 8 or higher in order to use this option.
5. Choose the startup memory. The memory value is in bytes. So if you need 8 GB of RAM, take 8 x 1024 for a total of 8192 GB. Leave the "Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine" un-checked. Click next.
6. On the connection drop down, choose "Internal-LAN" and click next.
7. On the "Connect Virtual Hard Disk" section, type in the name of the VM. This will be the name of the agent you are restoring. Leave the location on the default X drive. The size here is what was discussed in step 1. Type in the size and click next.
8. On the "Installation Options", choose the 2nd one "Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM" and choose the Image File button. Click on browse and navigate to C:\ISOs\ and choose the AppAssure boot CD for the version your Target Core is running that you plan to restore from. If on v5, choose AABootCDv5. If on v6, choose AABootCDv6. Once selected, click open. Click next, then finish. This will create the environment for you to recover your data from.
9. Start the newly created VM by right-clicking on the VM and choose start. You will also need to connect to this VM by right-clicking on the VM and clicking connect. Once it boots to the ISO you specified, it will have an IP address and a password that will be needed later.
10. Next, we will need to create a NAT entry in the pFSense Firewall to get access to this VM. Log into the pFSense interface with your CC Node credentials. On the main login page, you will notice on the right side a WAN IP address and a LAN IP address. The WAN IP address is what we will use to for the BMR restore address. Click on "Firewall" at the top and choose NAT. On the bottom right, click the + icon to add a new entry. You will now be on the "Firewall: NAT: Port Forward: Edit" section. The only items that need to be updated are: "Destination Port range". Leave it set on other and set the ports to 8006 - 8010. The next section titled "Redirect target IP" should be the IP address running on your newly created VM that you booted to the AABootCDv*. In this example it was 10.1.10.55. On the "Redirect target port", leave it as other and specify the start port of 8006. Then in the description field, type a name for this NAT entry like "BMR Port Forward". Click Save at the bottom, then apply the changes on the top right.
11. Connect to your target core. Navigate to the agent that you want to recover from and open the RP you want to use for the recovery.
12. Click on Restore and choose "Recover to any target machine using a boot CD". Check mark the box "I already have a boot CD running on the target machine". Input the WAN IP address of the pFSense firewall and the password from the newly booted VM. Click next to continue.
13. Under disk mapping, choose "Automatic Volume Mapping" and check mark the volumes on the left side that you wish to restore. In this example, I am only choosing the SRP partition (100 MB) and the C Drive (37.48 GB used of 99.66 GB). I also have another drive letter, but did not create a volume for that so I am leaving it unchecked. Make sure to check the Disk 0 on the right side. Click next. This will give you a summary. Verify the settings are correct and click finish.
