Overview
This Knowledgebase article provides instructions for recovering data to a new virtual machine.
This recovery method is useful if you do not need to maintain a virtual machine.
If you must maintain a virtual machine (including backup and conversion executed on a schedule), refer to the Knowledgebase article entitled Scheduling Conversion of a Backup to a Virtual Machine.
Virtual Recovery Prerequisites
- While not a requirement, we recommend installing a server with Hyper-V or VMWare somewhere on the network. This server may also act as your BDR, assuming there are enough resources available to additionally support a virtual machine. Exporting directly to a Hyper-V or VMWare host will automatically generate a virtual machine. Acronis also has the ability to export to various formats of VM disk file. You can then create a virtual machine and attach the disk to that virtual machine to boot it.
- Create an Acronis for Hyper-V agent. Do this by downloading and installing the Acronis install package from the Axcient support portal, selecting Manual Install and then selecting only the Acronis for Hyper-V agent. For recovery purposes the Acronis for Hyper-V agent does not have to be licensed.
- Install the Acronis for Hyper-V agent on the server containing Hyper-V.
- Add the newly-installed Hyper-V agent into your Acronis Management Server (AMS) console. Open the AMS console and locate the option Agent under Machines with Agents. Select Add an agent and enter the name of the newly installed Hyper-V enabled server. Specify the credentials for this server as well. Once this step is complete, the new Hyper-V server will be visible in the AMS console. Backups in your vault will now have this server as an option for a virtualization destination.
Recovering Data
To perform a recovery to a new virtual machine:
- Connect the console to either (1) the management server, (2) a machine where an agent is installed, or (3) a machine booted from a bootable media.
- Browse to the vault where your data is stored. Find the desired recovery point. Right click on that recovery point and select Recover as VM.

- The next window will display a Where to recover box. Ensure that Recover to: is set to New virtual machine and then click the Browse button.

- Select the host where restoration will occur.
- The destination disk for each of the source disks, source volumes, and the master boot records (MBRs) will be selected automatically. To change the recovery destinations, select the blue Recover option(s).
[Optional] To view or select the storage where the virtual machine will be created, select the blue Storage option.
[Optional] To change the name of the virtual machine, the disk provisioning mode, the allocated memory, or other settings, select the blue Virtual machine settings option.
NOTE: Machines of the same type or same name cannot be created in the same folder. If an error message caused by identical names occurs, change either the VM name or the path.
- In the When to recover section, select either Now or Laterfrom the Recover drop-down list. If the recovery task is scheduled for the future, specify the credentials under which the task will run.
- In the Task name field, enter a unique name for the recovery task.
- Select OK.
